Real science and technology

I am always confused when I talk with "leaders in science education" (I use that phrase because this is rarely observed in teachers who have a true passion for and background in science) who hold up the highly standardized curricula that we have seen recent years as THE science curriculum. I am confused because there seem to be little to intrigue the students and little that makes them want to pay attention because the topics are relevant and interesting. (This is coming from one who studied--and  continues to study--science.)

Looking at the inventions in the recent story by CNN:

I can see amazing science (biology, chemistry, and physics) all connected to technologies that are futuristic, but just barely futuristic. As we see the growing trend of defining the skills and knowledge that are necessary for the unpredictable future (a dubious proposition indeed), we see a trend away from the imaginative and complex thinking that our students need.
