TOPICS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL EDUCATION: Try something new in honor of Digital Learning Day!

Today is Digital Learning Day! Organized by the Alliance for Excellent Education, this day is a nationwide celebration of innovative teachers and common-sense, effective applications of digital learning in America's schools that support teachers, improve learning, and provide options for students to achieve at their highest potential. Digital Learning Day materials and resources support educators at all levels as they navigate the shift to more robust digital learning environments to achieve higher standards for students.

Our video talks about how digital learning, combined with engaging media content in the Inspiring Middle School Literacy collection, can make a real difference for middle school readers who need practice reading in the content areas:

TEACHER PROFILE: Eric Clark, founder and President of Quincy Tutor Network, MA

Eric Clark, founder and President of Quincy Tutor Network, Director of the Center for Academic Success at Eastern Nazarene College, is the upcoming associate VP at the National Tutoring Association. He taught 8th grade math for two years and now works with students from elementary school thorough college who are struggling in all subjects.

Even at the college level Eric feels many learning challenges come from a lack of foundational literacy skills, something that is addressed by the Inspiring Middle School Literacy
collection.

"I wish I'd had those resources 5 years ago when I was in the classroom, to enrich the dialogue," he says. He is excited about the potential for using the Inspiring Middle School Literacy collection and has recommended it in the "Math for Elementary Teachers" class he teaches at Eastern Nazarene College. He hopes to use it one-on-one with the kids he tutors, having them work through lessons on their own and then discussing the concepts together. He feels it will show

them they know more than they think they do!

He can also envision building on the online resources to develop a summer enrichment program for Middle and High School students like the one he already runs for incoming college freshmen, helping them earlier.

DON'T MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY!
We're looking for more teachers to try out lessons from the Inspiring Middle School Literacy Collection, and help us complete a research survey:

You'll get to choose from our extensive collection of resources and each teacher who completes the pilot test and subsequent 30-minute telephone interview will earn $50. If you are interested in pilot testing one of the lessons in your classroom in February, March or April, please click here to indicate your interest: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/MSLC2014

If you are chosen for the study, we will contact you to determine (with you) the best lesson(s) for you to try.  You will then use the lessons in your classroom anytime between February and April. After you have used the lesson, we will interview you by telephone for about 30 minutes to learn about your experience. We will send you a check for $50 after you have completed the study

FEATURED LESSON: Who Owns a Sound?

Who owns a sound? In this lesson, students learn about the debate over electronic sampling in music, and look at how copyright law affects people on both sides of the issue. Students develop their literacy skills as they explore a social studies focus on gather information to form an opinion. This is also a great opportunity to practice the standards related to writing to support argumentation.
