I wonder to what extent thus applies to educators? Why is it that I (as a teacher of information technology) am obligated to defer to "the standards" when planning what is essential for my students to know. One might think that 15 years of planning and managing IT systems, 25 years infusing the tools in my professional and personal life (which includes earning a PhD in the field and teaching the courses through which the standards writers earned their credentials) might indicate one whose opinion on matters related to technology might matter. Events turned out differently, however.
