Subject: VAMLE News: Scholar Leader Dinner and MGI

The VAMLE-NELMS Scholar Leader Dinner will be held at Plumley Armory, Norwich University, in Northfield, Vermont on June 4th, 6:00pm. Two students from each school with grades 5-8 are selected as outstanding scholars and leaders to be honored at this dinner. The dinner is free to students from member schools. Non-member school will pay $40 per student. Tables of 4, 8 and 10 are available for reservation. Last year, over 300 people attended this premiere middle school event, including teachers, principals, parents and grandparents. Each student receives a plaque and a photograph. Each eligible school has received nomination materials. Please choose your students and make your reservations now. Space is limited. For more information, go to http://www.nelms.org

 

The Middle Grades Institute will be held at the University of Vermont, June 23-27 for educators working with students, ages 10-15. With Personalize Learning Plans (PLPs) mandated for all Vermont middle and high schools, this summer's institute will model the development of a PLP in each participant's focus area. Three graduate credits are available from Johnson State College, Saint Michael's College, or UVM. 45 professional development hours are granted for those who do not want graduate credit. Participants take only one of nine focus areas, with four areas that can be applied toward the Vermont middle grades endorsement. The cost: $1750 for credit; $1250 for non-credit. The quality of the presentation was excellent and provided clarification of many critical issues surrounding argument and its implementation.

This was the best PD I've ever attended. More "take-away" than I've ever experienced.

Plethora of strategies, usable templates, activities, and ideas I will definitely use. Shauna was an excellent presenter! Relevant examples and great analogies. Evident she is knowledgeable and in classrooms.

Shauna is the most effective presenter I have seen. She provides relevant examples and answers questions. She gave quality suggestions and has the ability to control a group well. She has made me interested in what else "Keys" has to offer.

Excellent support materials. This is the first PD where I am starting to understand argument writing.

Breaking news: The Federal Communications Commission is now moving to end net neutrality.  We're teaming up with our friends at RootsAction to fight back.

Three months ago, Demand Progress and RootsAction joined with allied groups to deliver a petition with a million signatures to the FCC in support of net neutrality -- to keep the whole Internet available to everyone.

Last night, the news broke that the FCC intends to blow us off and betray the principle of equal access to the Internet.

Tell Chairman Wheeler and the rest of the FCC that we will not stand for this.

When he received those 1 million signatures in January, the FCC chairman said (awkwardly): "One of the great things about what the Internet does and why it needs to stay open, it enables people to organize and express themselves. A million people? That's boffo!"

Chairman Wheeler apparently thought a pat on the head would satisfy us. It certainly will not. We don't want empty rhetoric -- we want a commitment to the democratic principle of net neutrality.

 

Yesterday, Wheeler, a former cable lobbyist, revealed proposed new rules -- drafted by himself -- that would end net neutrality. Big corporations would pay for faster delivery of their content, making it difficult for smaller operations to compete.

Tell Chairman Wheeler and the rest of the Federal Communications Commission: we want action for democratic media, not platitudes as smokescreens for corporate domination of the Internet.

Ironically, last night's news of the FCC's impending action emerged on the same day that Brazil created the world's first Internet bill of rights -- protecting exactly the democratic principles that Chairman Wheeler and his FCC cohorts are on the verge of assaulting.

Thank you, Thank you, for making the 33^rd NELMS Annual Conference a success. Your part in celebrating and recognizing the "Magic in the Middle" is important and valuable. We appreciate it. We hope you took new ideas, strategies, and energy back to your school. Your feedback on the evaluation form was helpful and will be used in future planning.

 

We know schools are continuing to face financial challenges and at times it is also difficult to get release time to attend professional development opportunities. As you know middle level education is critically important but at times vulnerable.  We need to collaborate and join forces to insure our young adolescents are receiving the quality and type of instruction they need. In that light, please continue to give us feedback to insure we are meeting the needs of educators. You can also be helpful by reaching out to colleagues to join you next year at the conference. It is not too early to make plans to continue the magic March 23 & 24, 2015! Attending with a team can be particularly effective so you may want to start to organize a group.

The quality of the presentation was excellent and provided clarification of many critical issues surrounding argument and its implementation.

This was the best PD I've ever attended. More "take-away" than I've ever experienced.

Plethora of strategies, usable templates, activities, and ideas I will definitely use. Shauna was an excellent presenter! Relevant examples and great analogies. Evident she is knowledgeable and in classrooms.

Shauna is the most effective presenter I have seen. She provides relevant examples and answers questions. She gave quality suggestions and has the ability to control a group well. She has made me interested in what else "Keys" has to offer.

Excellent support materials. This is the first PD where I am starting to understand argument writing.

Fair Use Evaluator

A colleague has been working with his students on a research project... he has been working with students on understanding fair use as a part of the copyright laws that permit use by scholars and students and teachers for some purposes, but not every purpose.

We found the Fair Use Evaluator which helps students understand some of the issues surrounding fair use:

Oppia

Oppia came through my inbox last week. At first it looked like another tool for teachers that would be interesting but little used. Then, over the weekend, I looked closer an found it much more intriguing.

In a nutshell: a teacher (or anyone else) creates a step-by-step exploration (their term). When authoring, one has an html editor to compose contents (and insert images, embed video, and other elements). After the contents, the author adds questions.

The 21st century educator has access to vast resources, including many to present information to students. We are concerned with the efficiency of instruction today also, and I can imagine using Oppia for many of the simple information dispensing activities still necessary today.
